Single-Ply Roofing

There are 2 types of Single-ply membranes- thermoplastic or thermoset. Thermoplastic materials soften under warmer temperatures and harden in colder months. Thermoset roofing materials solidify after heating in the manufacturing process. They’re essentially “set”. You’ll hear their chemical based acronyms which are more commonly used, like EPDM, which is ethylene propylene diene terpolymer.

Some contain reinforcement layers like glass fiber, polyester fabrics or felt, and come in various options of thickness, typically 30 to 60 mils.

Modified Bitumen Roofing

Bitumen roofing replaces plastic based material with other modifiers and then reinforced with glass or poly fibers to added strength and longevity.

SBS Modified Bitumen (styrene-butadiene-styrene) increases the elasticity of the membrane for greater expansion and contraction capabilities. Typically, a two-ply system applied in rolls, the material is overlapped at the edge of the previous roll.

APP Modified Bitumen (atactic polypropylene) is ideal if your concern is primarily to further extend the lifespan of your roof, and use rubber.

These roofs are installed using a mix of adhesives and asphalt which is torched throughout the entire roof.

Built-Up Roofing

This type of roof has been used in America for over 100 years. They are manufactured by adding layer upon layer of waterproofing and bitumen (asphalt, coal based tar) and other materials, and then spread by mopping the layers onto your roof. for greater resistance to water and moisture.

The bitumen typically used in built-up roof systems is asphalt, coal tar or cold-applied adhesive. The asphalt or coal tar is heated in a kettle or tanker and then applied by mop or mechanical spreader. Mixed into all of this is a combination of gravel and other minerals or aluminum.
